Meditation & Brain Waves: Beta, Alpha and Theta (binaural beats) 1/2
Here is the first part of a very interesting video on brain waves: alpha, beta, theta & delta waves. An understanding on how binaural beats can induce a shift in consciousness by just listening to a recording. You can reach any meditation level that you want.
In the 1970s there was a lot of research done on what’s going on in the brain when people meditate. And, the TM movement (transcendental meditation), those people did tons of studies and some other places did too.
By the middle of the 1970s they knew a lot about of what the brain does during meditation and they are still finding out more today, now that they have different ways of creating images of the brain. Back then they were having polygraph-like tests about the brain.
I know you’ve probably heard me talk about this before, but I want to talk about the brain patterns so we all are around the same page. When you are in your average daily walking around state, you are in a beta brainwave pattern.. which is above 13 cycles per second. All day long the neurons in your brain are communicating with each other and the electrical energy that happens when you do that create standing waves in your brain: brainwaves. The higher ones are called beta brainwaves, there is also a higher brainwave called Gamma. But we’ll talk bout later.
When you get into the extreme high levels of beta you feel anxious and you really feel separate. You feel very much feelings of dis ease, dis harmony, separation. You are most likely to be afraid, depressed, disconnected from other people and yourself. As the brainwaves slow down and you are in the lower parts of beta your mind becomes more focused. You are able to do all sort of things like conversing with people, do math problems, etc.
If your brainwaves slow more and go below 13, ( 8 – 13) you get into an Alpha wave brain pattern. On Alpha your mind becomes more focused. You get drawn into whatever you are doing. Imagine when you are reading a book and you totally block the rest of the world, you are in an alpha state. Or when watching a movie, playing a video game, etc.
Alpha is also the time when are you just falling asleep but not quite asleep. Or waking up but not quite awake. Alpha is also the pattern for most meditation. Alpha is also associated with joy, peace and those kinds of feelings. Also in Alpha people begin to have much greater feelings of connection and ease and relaxation. In beta, especially the high part of beta people lose their temper, they feel like running away. When you are down to alpha you begin to develop the relaxation response, teh opposite of the fighter flight response. You become more happy, more joyful, more peaceful and more connected to things.
And then, if your brainwave slows down even more you get into the Theta pattern. Theta is more of a visionary state, when you sleep and you are experiencing rapid eye moment, you are in a theta state.
There is also a difference in the polygraph between sleep theta and mystical theta. Sometimes it takes years and years of training to get into certain spiritual states, or you can induce them also with mp3 recordings (binaural beats)
Theta is also the pattern of creativity. Suddenly something that didn’t make sense before makes sense. Advanced meditators often stay in alpha and switch into theta experiences, as they become better at their meditation practices. The deepest brainwave patterns is delta which is 4 cycles per second of below. Delta is the pattern that happens when you sleep. We also use it in our breathing, heart breathing and so on.

Hello, this is one awesome site about meditation. Great videos and information. So you think isochronic beats are the best?
